Bunion: What is the best treatment and what causes the painful bunions?
Many are unaware of how much the feet really do and what is involved even with simply walking. Each step you take involves a complex network of bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Combined with the weight they carry, feet take on a lot. Wearing the right kind of shoes, examining feet regularly, trimming toenails and washing properly are all ways to keep feet healthy. Over 10 million women in the UK suffer from bunions. A bunion is a bone deformity of the join at the base of the big toe.
A major sign that a bunion is forming is the big toe pointing towards the other toes on the same foot. This may force the foot bone attached to it.
Other symptoms of bunions include:
- A swollen, bony bump on the outside edge of the foot
- Pain and swelling over the big toe joint that’s made worse by pressure
- Hard, callused and red skin caused by the big toe and second toe overlapping
- Sore skin over the top of the bunion
- Changes to the shape of the foot, making it difficult to find shoes that fit
Women with bunions often find it difficult to find the right kinds of shoes to fit.
After many years of research, Lisa Kay designed a range of shoes to help with this problem and joined forces with Doctor Dawn Harper, a bunion sufferer herself.
Studies have found that over 75 percent of those with bunions are embarrassed by their feet

You should consult a doctor about your bunion when there is a persistent big toe or foot pain, a visible bump on your big toe joint, decreased movement of our big toe or foot or difficulty finding shoes that fit properly because of the bunion.
If left untreated, bursitis may occur which is a painful condition which occurs when the small fluid-filled pads that cushion bones, tendons and muscles near the joints become inflamed. Bunions are permanent unless surgically corrected.
