While you might be tempted to reach for a cup of coffee to feel awake, Kate Cook advises against this as one of her top tips to stop feeling tired.
“If you think of an energy fix and think caffeine – think again!” Cook cautioned.
Any type of caffeine hit from coffee, or tea, “is fooling your body into a false sense of security”.
Cook explained: “All it’s actually doing is overstimulating powerful stress hormones, making your heart beat faster and disrupting both your blood sugar and energy.”
Too much caffeine will eventually cause a slump later on in the day, she said.

Moreover, drinking caffeine too late in the afternoon will lead to poor sleep at night, thus exacerbating tiredness the next day.
Therefore, one of Cook’s long-term recommendations to boost energy levels is to cut down on caffeine; this could, in fact, help you to save money in the long run.
Instead, Cook suggested sipping on hot water with lemon as a refreshing, hydrating alternative.

Cook advised to step outside for at least 30 minutes daily when it’s the brightest (usually lunchtime).
“This will help you to feel more energetic for the rest of the day,” Cook promised.
“Or if walking isn’t for you, try yoga or Pilates for energising breathing techniques.”
Moving the body, in any capacity, is a free way to feel more energised once you’ve done it.

While not free, Cook did recommend topping up your energy levels with a magnesium supplement.
