SPA DOCTOR: Need a nap? Head down to Cornwall for a child-friendly retreat

The problem

My partner Mickael is a concierge at a private members’ club, I’m a journalist – and we both suffer disturbed sleep. Years of working nights and doing shifts that start at dawn have taken a toll on Mickael’s sleep patterns and once his alarm goes off, I rarely get back to sleep. We also have a toddler who doesn’t like going to bed. We long for one almighty nap.

The Solution

A long weekend miles away from noisy city traffic in St Austell in Cornwall. Hidden at the tail end of a winding valley you’ll find Bosinver Luxury Farm Cottages – a child-friendly farm retreat that combines the 18th Century Poldark experience with retro Smeg fridges and high-tech hot tubs.

Several studies have shown that the therapy, which involves applying pressure to various points on the soles of the feet, can help promote sleep and relaxation. While Mickael swam in the indoor heated pool, I chose an hour-long session with Tracy. Ten minutes in and I was dozing off. Not only did the gentle pressure soothe my sore feets and aching limbs, but it calmed my mind for the rest of the weekend. After a delicious pub lunch and a brisk coastal walk, we both collapsed on our inviting mattress and slept soundly for ten hours. When we got home, we felt relaxed and rejuvenated, enjoying night after night of deep slumber. Until the little one woke up, of course…
