Melissa Joan Hart Reveals She Contracted COVID-19 After Kids Went to a School Without a Mask Mandate

Despite some reassuring adult and older children vaccination numbers around the country, there are still risks that vaccinated people (and their children) can get COVID-19 — particularly as we head back to in-person school and many are electing not to have mask requirements. Melissa Joan Hart took to instagram on Friday to share that, though she’s vaccinated, she’s tested positive as a “breakthrough” COVID-19 case and one of her kids has also contracted the virus.

“I got COVID. I am vaccinated, and I got COVID and it’s bad. It’s weighing on my chest. It’s hard to breathe,” Hart told her followers.“One of my kids I think has it so far. I’m praying that the other ones are OK.”

Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while the vaccines are considered highly safe and highly effective at preventing severe illness and transmission of the virus, some cases of illness among vaccinated people (“breakthrough cases”) are possible.

“COVID-19 vaccines are effective. However, a small percentage of people who are fully vaccinated will still get COVID-19 if they are exposed to the virus that causes it. These are called “vaccine breakthrough cases.” This means that while people who have been vaccinated are much less likely to get sick, it will still happen in some cases. It’s also possible that some fully vaccinated people might have infections, but not have symptoms (asymptomatic infections). Experts continue to study how common these cases are,” per the CDC’s information page on breakthrough cases. “…There is some evidence that vaccination may make illness less severe in people who get vaccinated but still get sick. Despite this, some fully vaccinated people will still be hospitalized and die. However, fully vaccinated people are much less likely to be hospitalized or die than people with similar risk factors who are not vaccinated.”

Hart went on to say in her video that she feels the breakthrough cases came from people around the country being “lazy” about taking the precautions we know work (masking, social distancing, thorough hand-washing, etc.) and that her kids hadn’t been required to mask up while at school: “We got a little lazy, and I think as a country we got lazy and I’m really mad they didn’t have to wear masks at school. I’m pretty sure thats where this came from, and [there’s] nothing I can do about it now.”

She did say that her youngest child (shared with husband Mark Wilkerson) who didn’t test positive, has been a “superhero” by really taking to heart the need to mask up to protect himself, his teachers and peers.

While no one should feel guilty or like it’s a moral failing that they caught what is likely a highly infectious variant of an already super infectious virus, Hart says she does feel “sad and disappointed” in herself for getting lax on precautions and encouraged her followers to “stay vigilant and stay safe.”
