Diabetes is a common condition that affects around four million people in the UK, and 90 per cent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. The condition could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin. But you could lower your risk of diabetes symptoms by regularly taking certain supplements. One of the best ways to avoid high blood sugar is to take American ginseng supplements, it’s been claimed.
Supplements could benefit people with prediabetes or diabetes — particularly type 2
American ginseng could help diabetes patients to avoid high blood sugar, according to dietitian Marsha McCulloch.
It could help the body’s cells to respond to insulin, while also increasing the amount of insulin the body produces.
Regularly taking american ginseng could lower blood sugar levels by as much as 20 per cent after meals, she said.
“Scientists are testing many different supplements to determine if they help lower blood sugar,” McCulloch wrote on medical website Healthline. “Such supplements could benefit people with prediabetes or diabetes — particularly type 2.
“Over time, taking a supplement alongside diabetes medication may enable your doctor to decrease your medication dose — though supplements likely can’t replace medication entirely.
“American ginseng, a variety grown primarily in North America, has been shown to decrease post-meal blood sugar by about 20 per cent.
“Additionally, when people with type 2 diabetes took 1 gram of American ginseng 40 minutes before breakfast, lunch and dinner for two months while maintaining their regular treatment, their fasting blood sugar decreased 10 per cent compared to those on a placebo in healthy individuals and those with type 2 diabetes.
“Take 1g up to two hours before each main meal — taking it sooner may cause your blood sugar to dip too low.”
But, you should avoid using ginseng if you’re taking the blood thinner warfarin, as it can reduce its effectiveness.
You should always speak to a doctor before adding any new supplement to your diet.
Other diabetes supplements include cinnamon, probiotics, and even aloe vera, added McCulloch.
Symptoms of diabetes
Diabetes is a common life-long health condition. There are 3.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and an estimated 500,000 who are living undiagnosed with the condition
A classic symptom of diabetes can lead to rapid weight loss
You could also lower your risk of high blood sugar by eating a healthy, balanced diet, and by doing regular exercise.
There aren’t any foods that patients should actively avoid, but it’s important to limit the amount of sugar, fat and salt in your diet.
Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.
Common diabetes symptoms include persistent tiredness, having blurred vision, and passing more urine than normal.
Speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the warning signs of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.
