Those in favour of having it fell from 78 percent of 17-year-olds to 51 percent of 13-year-olds and 36 percent of nine-year-olds.
With the vaccine now being offered to all over-12s, researchers called for more information to be made available in formats youngsters will see, such as social media.
Professor Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, said that the study was “immensely important” and highlighted “some indecision, particularly in the younger teenagers”.
The survey was conducted across 180 primary and secondary schools between May and July by Oxford, Cambridge and UCL universities.
