Sildenafil is considered a relatively safe drug, which is why it is available without prescription. There are several common side effects of sildenafil, and taking too much can also cause unpleasant side effects. Some more serious reactions should be immediately flagged with a health professional. The NHS says Viagra can be taken by men aged 18 and over, but is not for women or children.
The most common side effects of Viagra are a headache, flushing, stuffy or runny nose, back pain, muscle pain, and nausea and dizziness.
There are also common changes in your vision and skin. These include rashes and abnormal vision.
This might include changes in colour vision, such as having a blue colour tinge, and blurred vision.
Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes can be a sign of a serious eye problem called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

Some people may also have ringing in their ears or dizziness.
Sildenafil should usually not be taken more than once every 24 hours, the NIH advises.
To get the most benefit from sildenafil, do not drink heavily before taking it.
“A beer or a couple of glasses of wine are not likely to stop or delay sildenafil working. But drinking lots of alcohol can make it more difficult to get an erection,” the NHS states.
Do not drink grapefruit juice if you’re taking sildenafil for pulmonary hypertension as it interferes with the way the medicine works.
You can eat and drink normally while taking sildenafil to get an erection.
Erectile dysfunction can often be improved for some people if you make changes to your lifestyle, such as quitting smoking and not taking recreational drugs.
Nonetheless, most men occasionally fail to get or keep an erection, according to the NHS.
The NHS says taking too much sildenafil by accident can cause unpleasant side effects, such as:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Indigestion
- Blocked nose
- Altered vision
“Talk to your doctor if you have taken too much sildenafil and you’re worried about these side effects,” it says.
In rare cases, it’s possible to have a serious allergic reaction to sildenafil.
The health body says that if you get a skin rash that may include itchy, red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin.
It may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect the way it works, causing side effects.
The Viagra site suggests: “Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.”
“Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects,” it adds.
