Those who drink coffee less likely to have erectile dysfunction, says study

An erection occurs when there is a signal to the brain which then increases blood flow heading towards the penis.

Muscles within the penis also begin to relax, allowing for more blood to enter. This pressure from the blood flow makes the penis then erect.

However, a number of factors could impede this process, therefore making an erection more difficult or occasionally impossible to achieve.

Erectile dysfunction is very common, especially in men over 40.

Possible causes for problems with erections or erectile dysfunction may include:

  • Peyronie’s disease, which involves damage to the nerves near your penis
  • Stress
  • Having low testosterone
  • A neurological condition
  • Drug or alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Depression
  • Being overweight or obese

It's usually nothing to worry about, but if it keeps happening it could be a sign of a more serious problem, so you should see a GP.

Men who drink two to three cups of coffee a day, however, are less likely to have erectile dysfunction (ED), according to researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

Published in PLOS ONE, the research found that men who consumed between 85 and 170 milligrams of caffeine a day were 42% less likely to report ED.

It also found that those who drank between 171 and 303 milligrams of caffeine a day were 39% less likely to report ED compared to those who drank zero to seven milligrams a day.

The results from the data among men were evident even in those who were overweight, obese or suffering with hypertension.

"Even though we saw a reduction in the prevalence of ED with men who were obese, overweight and hypertensive, that was not true of men with diabetes,” said David Lopez, lead author and assistant professor at UTHealth School of Public Health.

The cause may be attributed to the fact that caffeine triggers a serious of effects on the body which are known to cause relaxation of the penile arteries thereby increasing blood flow to the penis.

If you are experiencing constant ED even with a change of diet and lifestyle habits, it's important to speak to your GP.

Because ED may be a sign of an underlying health condition it is always best to find out the real cause.

When speaking with your GP, it's important to note all symptoms or any other unusual changes.

Your GP will ask for your medical and family health history and this may be followed by a physical exam.
