Selma Blair Just Shared A Heartbreaking Post About Her Insomnia Struggles

Insomnia straight-up sucks, and Selma Blair has repeatedly mentioned on Instagram that she struggles with it. Now, she’s opening up about just how much her sleepless nights unsettle her.
In a new Instagram post, Selma shows a photo of her legs in the bath. “Insomnia. I am like a waking baby. Afraid and want to cry,” she wrote. “I want my mom. I do. I will take a bath. And cry. The beginning is hard. I have to Remember.”
Insomnia can affect anyone, but while Selma hasn’t attributed her trouble sleeping to her multiple sclerosis, it’s a common side effect of the disease. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, people with MS may be up to three times more likely to have sleep disturbances than the general population and about twice as likely to have a reduced quality of sleep.

There are actually a lot of reasons why this can happen to MS patients, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society:
- Interruption of the body’sessential hormones and physiological processes (like hunger/thirst,temperature regulation, stress response) .
- Disruption of keyneurotransmitters involved in sleep like hypocretin, dopamine,norepinephrine, and melatonin.
- Deficiencies in Vitamin D andother nutrients.
- Side effects of MS medications.
- Increased napping during the daydue to fatigue.
- Reduced physical activity due tofatigue and MS-related disability.
- Emotional changes like stress,anxiety, or depression.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society specifically recommends patients who are having trouble sleeping try to treat the symptoms triggering their insomnia. They also recommend considering the side effects of medications, looking into the short-term use of sleeping pills, and trying cognitive behavioral therapy.
Selmahasn’t posted again on Instagram since, so hopefully she got some much-needed rest.
