How to lose weight without going to the gym: Five free activities for slimmers
2. Green gyms
You don’t need to pump iron in order to lose weight.
Burning calories can be as easy as spending more time outdoors.
Green gym encourages participants to get fit while helping the environment.
Those who sign up are guided through a series of conservation activities, from planting trees to sowing meadows.
According to the website, “almost a third more calories can be burnt in some Green Gym sessions than in an average aerobics class”.
3. Couch to 5k
Couch to 5K is a free running app endorsed by the NHS.
The software was created by fitness fan Josh Clark.
He wanted to help his 50-something mum to get off the sofa and go for a jog, which is where the idea was born.
The app is essentially a running plan that helps beginners to improve their stamina.
By the end of the nine week plan, users should be able to run for 5km.
4. Walking trails
Walking is a free and easy form of exercise which is recommended for everybody.
The NHS recommends 150 minutes of exercise a week, and ambling daily can massively help towards this goal.
For every 30 minute walk, you can expect to burn between 90 and 350 calories.
But if you’re finding it hard to get your steps in, following a trail could give you the motivation you need.
There are plenty of specified walks in the British countryside – simply grab an Ordinance Survey map and start exploring routes and paths you didn’t know about.
5. Cycle routes
Many cities have their own free cycling groups.
Exercising alongside pals can make trips more enjoyable – and there’s plenty of benefits to getting out on a bike.
Cycling improves cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and flexibility.
Those who carry out the activity regularly are also more likely to have strong bones and decreased body fat levels.
