Here's why you get electric shock butt pains when you're on your period

Period pain is hard enough to contend with – and just when you think it can’t get any worse, zap, you’re hit with an electric shock-like pain to the butthole.

In a split second it can feel as if life as you know it is about to end, before it vanishes as quickly as it appeared.

Reading this thinking ‘oh my god I thought it was just me’? No, period-haver, this really is a common phenomenon that we just don’t tend to talk about.

Fortunately, despite our reluctance to talk about the fact many of us who menstruate are experiencing weird electric shocks in our bumholes, one doctor has taken to TikTok to explain exactly why we experience them.

Speaking to his five million followers, Dr Karan Raj shared in the video, which has now garnered over 200k likes: ‘This is why you get butthole cramps on your period.

‘It’s known as proctalgia fugax – fleeting anal pain.’

He explained that when someone is on their period they release hormones called prostaglandins, the chemical which causes the muscles of your uterus to contract and prompts the uterine lining to shed.

‘It causes pain and cramps,’ Dr Raj continued.

‘But prostaglandins also cause contractions of the rectum, pelvic floor muscles and muscles around the anal canal – these intense contractions can cause muscle spasms and anal cramps.’

LIGHTNING BOLTS IN THE BOTTOM @caileneasely

In a follow up video about the phenomenon, Dr Raj shared some unfortunate news for those of us who feel like we’ve been hit in the butthole by a lightening bolt.

‘There is no cure for this stabbing butthole pain,’ he explained.

‘However, doctors can prescribe creams like GTN or diltiazem which increases blood flow and help to relax the anal sphincters.’

If you don’t fancy applying bumhole relaxing cream, Dr Raj also advises taking warm baths or getting into the downward dog yoga position to help stretch out your contracted rectal muscles.

Excuse us while we roll out the yoga mat….
