Weight loss is no easy feat and largely comes down to the amount of food consumed. By adding in a daily supplement alongside a healthy lifestyle, speeding up your weight loss journey could be a reality. But which ones are the best?
In a study with US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, fibre supplementation and how it could impact weight loss was analysed.
The study looked at overweight woman who were given either a placebo or fibre supplements.
The group who took the fibre supplements had lost a significant amount more of weight compared to the placebo group with the study concluding that fibre supplements could help speed up weight loss.
It’s important to consult your GP before embarking on any new supplements for weight loss.
Fibre is a carbohydrate found in plant foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Unlike other carbs, it isn’t easily digested by the body, so it passes quickly through the system without causing the blood sugar to rise.
All fruits and vegetables have fibre, but it’s mostly concentrated in the skin, seeds and membranes.
Fibre can be extracted and made into fibre supplements.
Glucomannan is a natural, water-soluble dietary fibre extracted from the roots of konjac, also known as elephant yam.
It’s available as a powder and tablets and is the main ingredient in shirataki noodles.
Like all soluble fibres, glucomannan is highly absorbent, and when it binds with water it forms a gel-like substance.
This gel structure makes you feel fuller when you eat so you don’t eat as much.
A study involving 176 healthy but overweight people on a calorie-restricted diet randomly assigned either a glucomannan supplement or a placebo to participants.
Researchers found that weight loss was significantly greater among those who supplemented with glucomannan.
For weight loss, a dosage of one gram, three times per day is considered sufficient.
It’s advised to mix with water which allows glucomannan to expand and can absorb up to 50 times its weight.
Fibre and gel-like substances also help keep gut bacteria healthy and promotes overall fat loss by reducing your appetite.
To further promote belly fat loss, combine daily weight loss supplements with other lifestyle changes, such as making healthier food choices and exercising more.
Ensuring you are properly hydrated is key not only when taking weight loss substances but also for your overall health and appetite control.
