Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is one of the most popular health hacks for its numerous benefits. But can there be too much of a good thing? You may develop unwanted side effects if you regularly add ACV to your diet.
ACV is a type of vinegar that’s gone through fermentation, to encourage the production of probiotics and certain enzymes.
The process means that ACV has fewer sugar and calories than apple cider.
Just a few tablespoons of the vinegar should be enough to provide you with its reported health benefits.
But some people have reported developing a number of side effects after regularly taking apple cider vinegar.
What are the side effects of ACV?
ACV is generally very safe for most people, but if taken in large quantities, it can lead to some side effects.
You may find that regularly taking apple cider vinegar could lead to tooth enamel erosion, warned nutritionist Rachael Link.
Tooth enamel is the thin outer layer of the tooth, and it’s the hardest tissue in the human body.
Enamel erosion increases the risk of sensitivity and discolouration.

ACV could also cause lower levels of potassium, and even a burning pain in the neck.
Meanwhile, if you have diabetes, you should speak to a doctor before taking apple cider vinegar.
The vinegar could lead to lower blood sugar levels, which may have an impact on your medication.
How to avoid side effects of ACV
If you regularly take ACV, you should dilute it with water before drinking.
“Although apple cider vinegar consumption is healthy and safe for most people, consuming large amounts can lead to some negative effects on health,” the nutritionist wrote for medical website Dr Axe.
“Some of the most common apple cider vinegar side effects include erosion of tooth enamel, burning of the throat or skin and decreased levels of potassium.
“Be sure to always dilute apple cider vinegar in water instead of drinking it straight to prevent negative side effects.
“You should also start with a low dose and work your way up to assess your tolerance.”
But, ACV could help to improve your weight loss diet plans, she added.
It helps to increase satiety – the sensation of feeling full after eating.
You could also lower your cholesterol, improve the health of your skin, and even relieve the symptoms of acid reflux with apple cider vinegar.
Some people have even reported treating warts and healing poison ivy rashes with ACV.
