Covid vaccines are being issued across the world as lockdown measures relax and life begins to return to somewhat normality. In the UK, 61,420,928 people have received a vaccine, with 38 million of those having had their first dose, and 23 million a second dose.
The UK’s vaccination efforts have been dubbed as “trailblazing” and jabs are quickly making their way down the age groups.
In a statement, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “Our trailblazing vaccination programme – the biggest and most successful in NHS history – is another great British success story and a testament to what can be achieved when all four corners of country comes together to defeat this virus.
“Our country has one of the highest uptake rates in the world and I’m delighted that so many have answered our call to arms.
“If you have not yet come forward, and you are eligible, I urge you to take up the offer – it could save your life and protect your loved ones.”

When can I get the Covid vaccine?
The Covid vaccines have been issued dependent on age, job and whether recipients have any qualifying medical conditions.
Currently, the vaccine is being given to
- people aged 32 and over
- people who will turn 32 before 1 July 2021
- people at high risk from COVID-19 (clinically extremely vulnerable)
- people who live or work in care homes
- health and social care workers
- people with a condition that puts them at higher risk (clinically vulnerable)
- people with a learning disability
- people who are a main carer for someone at high risk from COVID-19
For those under the age of 32, there is a handy tool you can use to get an estimate of when you are likely to be offered the vaccine.
Visit the calculator here, and input your age, and answer the health and career questions.
For example, a 28-year-old with no qualifying health conditions, who is not a carer or pregnant can expect to be offered the first dose of the vaccine between June 22, 2021 and July 23, 2021.
The second dose is then likely to be offered between September 14, 2021, and October 15, 2021.
The remaining population is expected to be offered at least the first dose by the end of July under the Government’s lockdown roadmap.
Second doses may be sped up in the coming weeks, following an announcement from Prime Minister Boris Johnson last week.
Mr Johnson said over 50-year-olds will see their second doses given quicker than previously anticipated following the increasing levels of the Indian Covid variant.
Indian variant hotspots in the UK include Bolton, Leicester, Kirklees, Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Bedford, North Tyneside and the London Borough of Hounslow.
A recent study from Public Health England has found the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines are highly effective against the Indian variant.
The study found two injections of either vaccine have a similar level of protection against symptomatic disease from the Indian variant as for the Kent variant.
PHE’s results found both vaccines were just 33 percent effective against the Indian variant three weeks after the first dose.
This is compared with 50 percent effectiveness against the Kent variant.
PHE said the vaccines are likely to be even more effective at preventing hospital admission and deaths.
Mr Hancock said the study’s results made him “increasingly confident” the last element of relaxing lockdown in England could take place on June 21 as planned.
He also said the data showed getting both doses of the vaccine was “absolutely vital”.
Home Secretary Priti Patel told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show: “We will continue to follow the data… we all have to be conscientious… we are distancing, wearing masks, following all the rules.
“That, of course, will help us to that unlocking on 21 June.”
