Fast 800: Dr Michael Mosley explains latest weight loss method

Whether you take the time to make yours from scratch or simply buy it from a local grocery store, bread is the essential food found in every kitchen.

Available in various shapes, sizes and flavours, the versatile yet cheap food can be turned into breakfast, lunch or snack in a matter of seconds.

While you might be a fan of the classic white loaf, a study, published in the journal Plant Foods for Human Nutrition, makes a strong case for a different type.

The research team found that wholegrain wheat bread was able to “significantly” reduce levels of belly fat.

Looking at 50 Japanese participants, the researchers assigned the subjects to a diet of either refined wheat bread or wholegrain wheat bread for 12 weeks.

The team collected blood samples and conducted computed tomography (CT) scans every six weeks to monitor the participants.

At the end of the study, the wholegrain wheat bread group saw their levels of visceral fat cut.

In case you aren’t aware, visceral fat, also known as belly fat, is lurking deep inside your abdominal cavity, surrounding some of your vital organs, such as the liver and pancreas.

This pesky location makes the fatty substance a smoking gun – it can trigger serious health problems, ranging from heart disease to diabetes.

Fortunately, the wholegrain bread was able to decrease the culprit by four centimetres, according to the study.

The team concluded: “Wholegrain wheat bread diet may contribute to preventing visceral fat obesity.”
