Harry Redknapp health: ‘I could feel it in my body’ The football manager’s health scare
Harry Redknapp, 72, feared for his life as he was rushed to hospital for surgery to remove a tumour from his bladder. The former Birmingham City manager said: “I could feel it in my body – I knew it wasn’t right.” Speaking to The Sun on Sunday in 2017, Harry continued: “This is the first time I’ve been properly worried. I knew I didn’t feel good, you know when something isn’t right, but it was Sandra who pushed me to the doctor in the end.”
I am lucky, I know that because it could have been malignant

Following the removal of the tumour, Harry was advised to have check-ups every three months.
He was given the all-clear from the cancer in July 2017.
Harry continued: “I am lucky, I know that because it could have been malignant.
“They cut it out, there was no other option.
“Once they did that I was up and about after a couple of days.
“I am relaxed about it now because what can you do?”
Bladder cancer usually develops in the bladder lining, but in some cases the tumour spreads into the bladder muscle.
Blood in urine is the most common symptom of this type of cancer, according to the NHS.
It explains: “The medical name for this is haematuria and it’s usually painless. You may notice streaks of blood in your urine or the blood may turn your urine brown. The blood isn’t always noticeable and it may come and go.”
But blood in urine isn’t the only symptom associated with bladder cancer.
The health body says less common symptoms include:
- A need to urinate on a more frequent basis
- Sudden urges to urinate
- A burning sensation when passing urine
If the cancer becomes advanced and begins to spread, it may start to cause pelvic pain, bone pain, unintentional weight loss and swelling of the legs.
Around 10,300 people are diagnosed with bladder cancer every year in the UK, according to Cancer Research UK.
A number of risk factors have been associated with the condition, but these won’t definitively give you cancer.
Risk factors include smoking and high alcohol intake.
If you experience any of the symptoms of bladder cancer, see your GP.
