A little hair loss isn’t usually anything to be worried about as most people lose around 50 and 100 hairs a day, usually without even noticing. However, stresses of life, genetics or medical conditions can cause a person to lose far more than a few strands. When this occurs, it can knock a person’s confidence, but experts recommend the power of an unlikely vegetable’s juice which has shown promising results in helping with hair regrowth.
Onion juice can help with hair loss according to science.
For one, onions are high in dietary sulphur, a nutritional element our bodies need.
Sulphur is found within amino acids, which are components of protein.
In order to grow strong hair, proteins which are sulphur rich are needed and this is where onion juice comes in.
When added to the hair and scalp, onion juice can provide extra sulphur to support strong and thick hair, thus preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth.
The sulphur found in onions may also help promote collagen production which in turn helps the production of healthy skin cells and hair growth.
It’s also believed that onions may boost circulation on the scalp.
Experts advise by applying onion juice to the hair and scalp it could increase blood supply to hair follicles, which in turn improves hair growth.
There have been studies on how onion juice prevents hair loss.
A study published in Wiley Online looked at onion juice as a new topical treatment for alopecia.
In the study patients were divided into two groups with the first group [onion-juice treated] consisting of 23 patients, 16 males (69.5 percent) and 7 females (30.5percent).
The second group [control; tap-water-treated] consisted of 15 patients, 8 males (53.3 percent) and 7 females (46.6 percent).
The two groups were advised to apply the treatment twice daily for two months.
Re-growth of terminal coarse hairs started after two weeks of treatment with crude onion juice and at four weeks, hair re-growth was seen in 17 patients (73.9 percent).
At six weeks, the hair re-growth was observed in 20 patients (86.9 percent) and was significantly higher among males (93.7 percent) compared to females (71.4 percent).
The study showed that the use of onion juice gave significantly higher results with regard to hair re-growth and that it can be an effective topical therapy for patchy alopecia areata.
