Certain fungi have long been deemed superfoods with a string of health advantages, including cutting the risk of developing cancer and helping people live longer.
Now a study of 24,000 adults shows those who ate mushrooms had less chance of suffering depression.The fungi contain ergothioneine, an antioxidant.
Studies have shown antioxidants help prevent several mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression.
White button mushrooms, the most common variety, also contain potassium, which is believed to lower anxiety.
Researcher Djibril Ba, of Penn State College of Medicine, Pennsylvania, said: “Mushrooms are the highest dietary source of ergothioneine.”
The study is published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
