Some crystals, like amazonite, sound like massive multinational shopping websites. Others sound like bubbly beverages (sodalite), and some even sound like human names (jasper). What do they all have in common? Well, each crystal is unique in appearance, formation, and function, and there’s a reason crystal gurus collect so many different types. They might use lapis lazuli to treat one thing and aragonite for something else entirely.

One crystal to look out for because of its special properties is carnelian. This stone is natively mined in India, Serbia, Germany, and Brazil, but it’s used in metaphysical healing practices around the globe (via Fire Mountain Gems). In fact, artifacts crafted from carnelian date back to the Bronze Age, and Ancient Egyptians placed carnelian on mummies to help guide the departed on their journey into the afterlife. Carnelian was even utilized in the Middle Ages, when alchemists would use it to extract the power of other gemstones by including it in their stone boiling process.

Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, per Charms of Light. Ruled by Mars, it’s associated with the numbers 5 and 6; the element fire; and the zodiac signs Virgo, Cancer, Leo, and Taurus. It’s even a birthstone for the month of July. Color-wise, carnelian can appear “clear-to-translucent red-brown, which may vary from a pale orange to pink, or from gray to an intense almost black.”

Here’s everything you should know about using carnelian.

Carnelian is especially good at promoting courage

Carnelian, a fire stone, “infuses the body with life and light calling on the powers of physical energy” (via Tiny Rituals). In the process, it reportedly helps stimulate your muscles, maintain your organ health, and regulate your oxygen and help it flow freely. While it may help with lower back pain, arthritis, rheumatism, and neuralgia, it supposedly can stimulate the libido, too.

Moreover, it’s a stabilizing stone, according to Charms of Light, which means that it “restores vitality and motivation” and “stimulates creativity.” As both a fire and stabilizing stone, carnelian helps you believe in yourself, which means it’s an excellent stone to use when facing any kind of challenge. It can help give you the courage to succeed.

Carnelian’s metaphysical abilities have changed over time, but they remain impressive. “From antiquity, carnelian has been worn in cameos in the belief that it would ward off insanity and depression,” per Fire Mountain Gems. “In contemporary times, carnelian is thought by some to enhance self-esteem and creativity, to combat feelings of inadequacy, to increase physical energy and overcome insomnia.” When used as a talisman, the stone can supposedly even ward off misfortune, like fires, per Fire Mountain Gems. At the same time, it helps you absorb things you need, like vitamins and minerals (via Charms of Light).

At the end of the day, if you don’t have carnelian in your healing crystal collection, you probably need to check it out!
