Drinking beer daily ‘almost doubles your chances of living until 90’, study says

Beer has a pretty bad reputation.

Various studies have associated it with bloated bellies and liver damage.

But apparently, enjoying half a pint everyday could have its benefits too.

Researchers at Maastricht University in The Netherlands found that men who drink beer in these small quantities are 81% more likely to reach the age of 90 than those who are tee-total.

It’s a similar story for female beer drinkers too.

Scientists say ladies who drink half pints increase their chances of celebrating nine decades of life by a third.

The study tracked alcohol habits of 5,500 people over the course of two decades.

It found that drinking booze in moderation can be good for your heart – but too much can be damaging.

Professor Piet van den Brandt said: "Our analyses show significantly positive associations between alcohol and longevity in men and women."

Having said this, the scientist isn’t encouraging people to go out and start bingeing.

He explained: "The results should not be used as motivation to start drinking."

Sir Ian Gilmore, from the Alcohol Health Alliance UK, added: "There is no evidence to suggest non-drinkers should start for the good of their health."

While the study is pleasing for those who enjoy beer, research is still in its infancy.

More work needs to be done to link alcohol to heart health and life longevity.

The NHS urges Brits to drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week.

This is equivalent to six pints of beer.
