Diabetes type 2 warning – one of the very first signs of high blood sugar in your eyes

Diabetes is a common condition that affects more than four million people in the UK, and 90 percent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. You could be at risk of high blood sugar if you find that your vision is becoming increasingly blurry, it’s been revealed.

Type 2 diabetes could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.

Without enough of the hormone, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into usable energy.

It’s crucial that if you think you may have diabetes, you speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

One of the very first warning signs of diabetes is developing blurred vision, it’s been claimed.

Diabetes can cause blurry vision by fluid leaking into the lens, according to medical website Healthline.

Generally, eye damage that’s caused by diabetes – which is also known as diabetic retinopathy – is a result of blood vessel problems around the retina.

Most patients start out with only mild vision problems, it said.

But, left untreated, diabetes patients can eventually completely lose their eyesight.

“Hyperglycaemia can negatively affect every part of your body, including your eyes,” it said.

“Blurry vision is often one of the first warning signs of diabetes. Your vision may be blurry because fluid is leaking into the lens of your eye.

“This makes the lens swell and change shape. Those changes make it hard for your eyes to focus, so things start to look fuzzy.”

Untreated diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of blindness in the US, according to the National Eye Institute.

But, just because you develop blurry vision, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have diabetes.

Blurred vision could also be caused by a number of other conditions, including dry eyes, being near-sighted, or even an infection.

You should see an optician if your vision starts to change.

But, if you have diabetes, it’s important to have regular eye check-ups, to avoid complications.

Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the signs and symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.

Common diabetes symptoms include feeling very tired, having an unquenchable thirst, and passing more urine than normal.

You should speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the warning signs or symptoms of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.

Diagnosing the condition early is very important, because patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart disease and strokes.
