Kym Marsh health: What contagious bug did the former Coronation Street star catch?

Posting on Instagram over the recent festive period, the mum-of-four (to Emily, Archie, David and Polly) revealed she and her eight-year-old daughter, Polly, were struck down the “winter vomiting bug”.

Not only that, Kym wrote: “So after me and Polly both got struck down with the norovirus last night, today I am thankful for makeup and Lucozade! The show must go on as they say.”

Performing on stage as Jovie for Elf: A Christmas Spectacular, in Dublin, fans were quick to comment about her “irresponsible” move.

With one fan commenting: “100 percent shouldn’t even be near anyone if you’ve had this. So contagious.”

What is norovirus?

The NHS reveal that norovirus is a contagious bug that causes sickness and diarrhoea.

The main symptoms of norovirus are: feeling sick (nausea), diarrhoea and being sick (vomiting).

Vomiting usually stops within two days, while diarrhoea can continue up to a week.

People may also suffer from a high temperature (38C or above), a headache and an aching body.

Symptoms come on suddenly within one to two days of being infected.

And it appears the NHS has its own words of wisdom for anyone suffering from the norovirus this winter.

“Stay off school or work until the symptoms have stopped for two days,” says the health body.

“Also avoid visiting anyone in hospital during this time, as this is when you’re most infectious.”

The norovirus can spread almost effortlessly, infecting new people just by being nearby.

Not even alcohol hand gels kill the virus, but the NHS does recommend frequently washing hands with soap and water to help prevent norovirus from spreading.

Specifically, norovirus can be caught in the following ways:

Close contact with someone with norovirus

Touching surfaces or objects that have the virus on them, then touching your mouth

Eating food that’s been prepared or handled by someone with norovirus

When suffering from norovirus, it’s important to drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Water and squash is highly recommended, taking small sips to ease any feelings of nausea.

And fizzy drinks are to be avoided as they can make diarrhoea worse.

Plenty of rest at home is advised, as well as eating when you feel ready to.
