Flax is made up of fat that is good for you! More that half of the fat in flax seed is alpha-Linolenic acid, an essential Omega 3 fatty acid. Long ago, before fast food restaurants, before French fries, before -- my favorite -- chips and dips; our ancestors ate an essentially healthy diet. They ate a combination of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids. Omega 6 fatty acids are found in corn, safflower, sunflower, canola and soybean oils. Omega 3 essential fatty acids are found in flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, along with fish such as salmon, herring, trout, sardines and albacore tuna. It is the combination that is important! Our ancestors ate a diet with a 1 to 1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids. However, with the mass use of vegetable oils in our diet, we now eat a ratio anywhere from 20 to 1 to 25 to 1 of Omega 6 to Omega 3 essential fatty acids. This is a blueprint for trouble! Many scientists believe that this combination is a major reason for the high incidence of heart disease, hypertension, obesity and some forms of cancer. When the Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids maintain a healthy balance, they help our body to: - Alert the immune system to go into action
- Tells the blood platelets to clot or not by sticking together or separating
- Regulates inflammation
- Forms neural pathways for brain activity in learning, memory, and mood regulation
- Signals the blood vessels to either widen or to narrow
When our bodies are deficient of Omega 3 essential fatty acid, studies have noted an increase in the chronic health problems of diabetes, cancer, arthritis, inflammatory diseases, depression, heart disease, hypertension, memory problems, weight gain and some allergies and skin conditions. What can we do to change this dismal scenario? The best way would be to increase your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids. This can be done by ingesting the fish products mentioned earlier, and/or to add 2 to 4 tablespoons of ground flax to your daily diet. What's so great about lignans, and what is a lignan anyway? Lignans are a type of natural plant chemical. This chemical is located within the cell of the flaxseed. When you eat ground flax, the digestive process works on the lignans to convert them into potent, hormone-like substances. These are known as phytoestrogenic (phyto=plants) compounds. Research has indicated that those people who eat a diet high in lignans have a low incidence of breast, colon and prostrate cancers. Scientists are concluding that the chemical release of these phytoestrogenic compounds are able to block the action of hormone sensitive cancers. Ground flax seed provides up to 800 times more lignans that any other plant! (Note that flaxseed oil contains virtually no lignans.) Eating 2 to 4 tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily will help your body to prevent the formation of cancerous tumors. What's so great about fiber? Fiber is necessary for the digestive system to work properly. Foods with a high amount of fiber include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Flaxseed is a grain, therefore high in fiber. But, what makes flax so outstanding is its mix of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble Fiber: Most of the soluble fiber in flax is mucilage. Mucilage is a thick, sticky substance. Mucilage is an effective cholesterol-lowering agent. It can be ground and baked into muffins or breads or added to your morning juice to provide you with the desired amount of fiber. Insoluble Fiber: Studies show that insoluble fiber is very helpful for regulating bowel movements and preventing constipation. Flaxseed's all natural fiber components have the ability to hold water, helping to soften the stool and allowing it to move through the colon quickly. Flaxseed, therefore, is rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber. Together these fibers help to lower cholesterol, aid digestion, and prevent constipation, which has a protective effect against cancer.
Suggested Use: As a dietary supplement, take three capsules daily with meals.
